MIDAT (acronym for Minimally Invasive Diagnostic and Therapeutic) was registered as a Clinic and 15-bedded Nursing Home in year 2000. It was started with the vision of being a pioneering medical institution focused on minimally invasive and minimal access surgeries and healthcare in Nepal. Today MIDAT is a 25-bedded hospital which continues to offer the latest and most up-to-date medical and surgical care to its patients and Nepali society at large.
MIDAT, from its genesis, has been known for laparoscopic surgical procedures and was one of the earliest hospitals in Nepal to provide this service. MIDAT was also the first establishment in Nepal to start laparoscopic urology and gynecology, and is proud to be the first in Nepal to successfully perform and introduce a number of procedures including laparoscopic nephrectomy, pyelolithotomy, ureterolithotomy, among others. Many of these historic milestones in Nepal’s medical history have been presented in both national and international conferences.
A strong advocate and believer in minimally invasive and minimally interventionist medical practices, MIDAT has over the years continued to stay ahead of the curve in terms of medical technology and related practices. For instance, MIDAT was the first institution in Nepal to adopt HD technology for laparoscopic procedures (in 2005), and also the first to introduce 3D Laparoscopy in Nepal (in 2017). Since 2018 MIDAT has also introduced laser surgery to continue in its long tradition of offering the best and latest service to its patients.
Among many firsts, MIDAT was also the institution to start the practice of “Day Care Surgery” in Nepal. This meant many patients who underwent major surgeries would be discharged to recover in the comforts of their own homes within 24 hours, if not the very same day. This is one of the strong benefits of minimally invasive procedures which is also more economic, advantageous, and with faster recovery time for patients.
Other than providing state-of-the-art medical service to patients, MIDAT has also been a strong proponent of dissemination of knowledge and training on minimally invasive diagnostic and therapeutic medical practice. Since as early as 2005, MIDAT has provided numerous trainings and workshops (at various levels) to surgeons, urologists, gynecologists, Operation Theatre (OT) nurses, technicians and related staffs. Training and development of skills in minimally invasive and minimal access procedures has very much been in the DNA of MIDAT and it is proud to have provided training to more than 100 medical professionals from all across Nepal.
In line with its mission and vision to not only provide the best medical service but to also increase the level and capacity of minimally invasive services in Nepal, MIDAT is now in the process of formalizing its training and skills development program. In 2019, MIDAT Skills Centre will officially be launched and will host a dedicated minimally invasive and minimal access skills development and training programs. Working with a network of partners which include other like-minded hospitals, medical schools and societies, doctors, professionals, specialized medical equipment companies and vendors, and other related organizations to continue on MIDAT’s mission in staying ahead of the curve to ensure the most up-to-date and best result-oriented medical services available to the people of Nepal.

• Be an institution which will serve as a center for continuous professional development and skills training in minimally invasive and minimal access procedures and treatment.
